Subcontracting Research in The Fast fashion Industry

When I decided to double major and study both design and global issues that face our generation, I wanted to find projects that allowed me to study global issues that could be solved or discussed through art and design. In doing research about the fast fashion industry for my capstone in international studies I explored the life cycle of clothing and researched within Chicago. What I found was a stark contrast in how clothes are displayed in shops dotting Michigan Ave, as the small thrift shop in Lakeview or Good Will in Rodger's Park. I hope to illustrate the obscene amount of clothes that are being produced, as well as the lack of value we give these garments.

For my senior capstone in exploring how corporations interact with states, I further researched the fast fashion industry and what barriers stood in the way of workers being treated ethically as well as consumers from shopping more sustainably. I found that the largest problem garment workers face is being taken out of the supply chain due to rampant subcontracting. This photo series demonstrating the harsh juxtaposition between fast-fashion retailers and where the clothing ends up along the life cycle of clothes, and was a product of my research.
